| Samenvatting |
As negociations proceed for the post-Kyoto climate change regime, major obstacles stand in the path to their succesful completion. This book addresses the political economy of the climate change debate, questioning the disconnect between the current negotiation framework, based around the nation-state, and the neoliberal policies driving the world economy, organized around transnational corporations. Given the expanding carbon footprint of China, India and other developing economies, the debate over who is to blame and who should pay can no longer be ignored. |

Dead Aid. Why aid is not working and how there is another way for Africa. Doodlopende hulp. Waarom ontwikkelingshulp niet werkt, en wat er wel moet gebeuren.. |

| Samenvatting |
At a time of unprecedented global prosperity, children are starving to death. Are we not being generous enough? Or is the problem somehow insoluble and inevitable outcome of historical circumstances. Moyo argues that the most important challenge we face today is to destroy the myth that aid actually works. In the modern globalized economy, simply handing out more money, however wel intentioned, will not help the poorest nations achieve sustainable long-term growth. Moyo analyses the history of economic development over the last 50 years and shows how aid crowds out financial and social capital and feeds corruption; the countries that have 'caught up' did so despite rather than because of aid. There is however, and alternative. Extreme poverty is not inevitable. Moyo shows how, with improved access to capital and markets and with right policies, even the poorest nations can prosper. If we really want to help, we have to do more than just appease our consciences, hoping for the best, expecting the worst. We need first to understand the problem. |

| Uitgever(s) |
Tokyo, New York, Paris, United Nations University Press, 2009, 318 p., ISBN 978-92-808-1162-9 |
| Samenvatting |
As multilateral negociations become increasingly complex and protracted, preferential trade agreements have become the centrepiece of trade diplomacy, pushing beyond tariffs into deep integration and beyond regionalism into the web of bilateral deals, raising concerns about coercion by bigger players. This study examine the American, European and Asian approaches to preferential trade agreements and their effect on trade, incvestment and economic welfare. With bilateralism in trade driven by foreign policy, environmental and social concerns, as well as market access objectives, the key question today is not preferential agreements or multilateralism, but how the various negociations interact. This volume argues that preferential agreements can complement the multilateral system but only if that system is strong enough to continue to reduce barriers to trade and strengthen rules, and so limit the distorting effects of bilateralism. |

2006 |
| Samenvatting |
The Doha Development Agenda holds the promise of substantial gains for developing countries. However, the way to realize these gains is far from obvious: the interests of various countries and groeps of countries differ widely, and technical complexities have hampered further progress since very start of negociations. This volume provides an analysis of the main characteristics of the Doha Development Agenda: the trade talks themselves, the incresaing complexity of the WTO and its members' conflicting interests, particularly in the area of agricultural protection. The main challenge on the table is to come up with a package deal that serves the interest of developing countries in particular. Faber and van Dijck analyse the effects of various trade liberalization scenarios and present the results for varoious groups of developed and developing countries, including the G-20 and the least developed countries. |

It goes to the heart of human livelihood and society. |
