'The Rwandan Genocide' sparked a horrific multinational conflict that swept across sub-Saharan Africa, ultimatetly leading the death of 4 million people. Prunier offers an account on how one terrrible episode laid the groundwork for a sweeping and disastrous upheaveal. He describes the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, when 2 million Hutu refugees - a third of the Rwandan population -fled to exile in Zaire in 1996. Shortly thereafter, the new Rwandan regime sent its forces to Zaire and attacked the refugees. The Rwandan forces then turned on Zaire's President Mobutu and with a help of alied African countries, overthrew him. Prunier shows that the collapse of the Mobutu regime and the ascension of the corrupt and erratic Laurent-Désiré Kabila created a power vacuum that drew Rwanda, Uganda, Angola, Zimbabwe, Sudan and other African nations into extended and chaotic war.... |
