Development Cooperation 2020? International seminar on the future of development cooperation

Are we witnessing the end of development cooperation as we know it? - How are global issues impacting the development agenda? - Will resource scarcity force us to change the development model we aim for? - Will growing inequality become our common enemy or divide us further? How will demographic and migration trends affect development challenges? - How will the emerging economies shake up the donor community? - Will industry upgrade from occasional philanthropists to development actors? - In what civil environment will we be operating in the future? - What does all this mean for my organisation?

They are all pressing questions, and there is no way of knowing what the right answers will be 10 years from now. We can however imagine the possible answers, and allow them to challenge the way we think about and act on development and development cooperation.With this aim, and as part of the research activities of the 11.11.11 Research Chair on Development Cooperation, HIVA initiated an exploratory research into the future of development cooperation.

Using scenario planning as methodology, and co-faciliated by renowned experts from NormannPartners, HIVA took an array of policymakers, experts and practitioners from home and abroad through a process of systematic exploration of possible futures for development cooperation in 2020. Their combined input over the past six months was brought together in three scenarios building on different drivers, expected to affect global development by 2020.

We now look forward to present and discuss the outcome of this process at an international seminar in Leuven on 16th of February 2012. The aim of this seminar is to share the results of the research project with stakeholders from civil society, government and private sector, as well as to deepen the understanding of what these different scenarios would mean for the practice of different groups of development actors. The set-up is two-fold: the seminar will open with a presentation, a contextual analysis of the different scenarios, and a keynote presentation on these trends, the afternoon will be devoted to the discussion of the implications of these scenarios and possible strategies for the future.
