| Auteur(s) |
Stuart, Tristram |
| Uitgever(s) |
London, Penguin Books, 2009, , ISBN 978-0-141-03634-2 |
| Samenvatting |
Farmers, manufactures, supermarkets and consumers in North America and Europe discard up to half of their food - enough to feed all the world's hungry. Forests are destroyed and nearly one tenth of the West's greenhouse gas emissions are released growing food that will never be eaten. While affluent nations throw away food through neglect, in the developing world crops rot because farmers lack the means to process, store and transport them to market. But there could be remedies for what has become one of the world's most pressing environmental and social problems. Stuart encounters grotesque examples of profligacy, but also inspiring innovations and ways of making the most of what we have. |

The Global Food Economy. The Battle for the Future of Farming. |
| Auteur(s) |
Weis, Tony |
| Uitgever(s) |
London, New York, Zed Books, 2007, 217 p., ISBN 978-1-84277-795-4 |
| Samenvatting |
The current food economy is characterized by immense contradictions. Food mountains, bountiful supermarkets and rising levels of obesity stand in stark contrast to widespread hunger and malnutrition. Transnational companies dominate the market in food and benefit from subsidies, whilst farmers in developing countries remain improverished. Food miles, mounting toxicity and the 'ecological hoofprint' of livestock mean that the global food economy rests on increasingly shaky environmental foundations. Weis looks at how such a system came about, and how it is being enforced by the WTO. He considers how we can find a way of building socially just, ecologically rational and human food economies. |

Rosset explains how the free trade policies and neoliberal economics of the WTO, American governement and EU give us a food system that noone outside a small corporate elite wants. This guids sets out an alternative for agriculture policy taking it outside the WTO's ambit. Food is not just another commodity to be bought and sold. It goes to the heart of human livelihood and society. |

| Samenvatting |
Processed food and drinks are usually produced in the country or region where it is consumed. Trade in processed food is only 6 % of what is consumed worldwide. An important current trend affecting the whole processed food sector is that prices for processed food companies, from the top global brands to small food manufacturers, are under serious pressure from supermarket strategies and supply requirements. This SOMO report analyses the contribution thay primary and full processing of food can make to poverty reduction and sustainable development within the current international context. First the report provides insights into the level of production, sales and international trade of processed food. Next, it discusses the structural, market, private and governement obstacles to exports and the development of a domestic processed food industry in developing countries. The report identifies the many problems which are still not sufficiently addressed in order to make food processing beneficial to all stakeholders and sustainable development. However the report does not focus on the critical issues of farmers and other suppliers to the processed food and drink industry. The study provide arguments for civil society organisations to feed the debate on trade and investment, corporate accountability and globalisation. A final chapter provides arguments to make purchasing practices more equitable and give stakeholders more rights to seek remedies against the abuses of foreign food companies and supermarkets. |

Food Wars. The Global Battle for the Mouths, Minds and Markets. |

Lang, Tim; Heasman, Michael |
| Uitgever(s) |
London, Sterling, Earthscan, 2004, 365 p., ISBN 1-85383-702-4 |
| Samenvatting |
The emergence of global markets has a far-eaching impact on what we eat and on health, food security, social justice and quality of life. What matters now is not just what we eat, but how and where it has been produced, distributed, and processed, and the assumptions upon which this production is based - a global politics of food and health. 'Food Wars' argues that two conflicting paradigms -one developing food through integrating the 'life sciences', the other through integrating ecology- are battling to replace the dominant industrial-productionist model of the 20th century, both grappling to attract investment, public support and policy legitimacy over the appropriate use of biology and food technologies. |

Horman, Denis |

Millstone, Erik; Lang, Tim |
| Uitgever(s) |
Brighton, Earthscan, 2003, 128 p., ISBN 1-85383-965-5 |
| Samenvatting |
Food is vital for our health and welfare, and its production critically affects the environment as well as the wealth of nations. Despite a rapid increase in trade, hundreds of millions of peoples remain hungry, while chronic obesity is increasing worldwide. Much of the grain that could amply feed the world's population is fed instead to cattle to satisfy the rich world's appetite for meat. New technologies, such as GM crops, promise to increase food production, but are they completely safe? How do markets work, and whose vested interestes are at stake? What are the impacts of different forms of farming, processing, transportation, retailing and changing eating habits? Vividly presented through the creative use of map and graphics, this atlas provides clear and comprhensive aacounts on the world food chain. |
