| Uitgever(s) |
Great Britain, Palgrave Macmillan, 2009, 248 p., ISBN 978-0-230-21855-0 |
| Samenvatting |
Make Poverty History was a major episode of protest that took place in 2005 in the UK with the aim of influencing the G8 meeting in July that year. This book follows the campaign throughout its lifetime and unpacks the tensions that developed around of 'Make Poverty History', particularly the conflict between campaigners and marketeers over the content of messages. Looking at how attitudes towards governement and political opportunities influenced the negociation of communications, it analyses how these were understood by the campaign's 3 audience segments: the mass public, the interested and the activists. It looks at public stereotypes on global poverty and wether the campaign managed to modify them. It maps out 'Poverty History's frame on economic justice and confronts its with audience reactions. |

| Corp. Auteur(s) |
OECD, DAC, International Partnership of Donors and Partner Countries |
| Samenvatting |
The 2005 Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness defines the principles and commitments by which donors and developing countries intend to ensure that aid is effective as possible in contributing to the MDGs and other internationally agreed development objectives. This report is a mid-term review of progress towards these commitments, drawning on the 2008 Paris Declaration Monitoring Survey and the Evaluation Synthesis Report among many other resources. Part I highlights the main actionable lessons, Part II covers the commitments under the 5 Partnership Principles related to ownership, alignment, harmonisation, development results and mutual accountability, together with the 4 subjects of critical relevance: sector perspectives, the role of civil society organisations, situations of fragility and conflict, and the changing aid architecture. |

Paris, Grasset, 2009, 314 p., ISBN 978-2-846-68151-9 |

| Uitgever(s) |
Londen, Zed Books, 2008, 358 p., ISBN 978-1-84277-893-7 |
| Samenvatting |
NGOs can and must re-engage with the project of seeking alternative development futures for the world's poorest and more marginal. This wil require clearer analysis of the contemporary problems of uneven development, and a clear understanding of the types of alliances NGOs need to construct with other actors in civil society if they are to mount a credible challenge to disempowering processes of economic, social and political development. |

From Poverty to Power. How active citizens and effective states can change the world. |
| Auteur(s) |
Green, Duncun; Sen, Amartya, foreword |
| Uitgever(s) |
Oxford, Oxfam International, 2008, 522 p, ISBN 978-0-85598-593-6 |
| Samenvatting |
The 21st century will be defined by the fight against the scourges of poverty, ineguality, and the threat of environmental collapse -as the fight against slavery or for universal suffrage defined earlier eras. Green argues that it requires a radical redistribution of power, opportunities, and assets to break the cycle of poverty and inequality and to give poor people power over their own destinies. The forces driving this transformation are active citizens and effective states. |

Democracy and Development was the title of the lecture organised by the Netherlands Chapter of the Society of International Development (SID). The title suggests there is a positive relationship between the two: more democracy implies more openness and checks and balances, more accountability and less corruption and all this would be conductive to sustainable development. |

Identity and Violence. The Illussion of Destiny. |
| Auteur(s) |
Sen, Amartya |
| Uitgever(s) |
London, New York, W.W.W Norton, 2006, 215 p., ISBN 0-393-06007-1 |
| Samenvatting |
Sen argues in this book that conflict and violence are sustained today, no less than in the past, by the illusion of a unique identity. Indeed the world is increasingly taken to be a federation of religions -or of 'cultures' or 'civilisations' -ignoring the relevance of other ways in which people see themselves, involving class, gender, profession, language, litterature, sciencen music, morals or politics. Global attempts to stop such violence are also handicapped by the conceptual disarray generated by the presumption of sigular and choiceless identity. When relations among different human beings are identified with 'a clash of civilizations', alternatively with 'amity among civilizations', human beings are miniaturized and deposited into little boxes. Through his investigation of such divers subjects as multiculturalism , postcolonialism, fundamentalism, terorism, and globalization, Sen brings out the need for a clearheaded understanding of human freedom and the effectivenes of constructive public voice in the global civil society. The world, can be made to move toward peace as firmly as it has recently spiraled toward violence and war. |

| Auteur(s) |
Jones, Tim; Hardstaff, Peter |
| Uitgever(s) |
Londen, World Development Movement, 2005, |
| Samenvatting |
This report is concerned with democracy; a complex issue at the best of times, made even more complex not only by the many local, regional and national struggles for self-determination across the globe but also by the development of supra-national decision-making bodies that are many times removed from individual citizens. It is this latter complexity, and in particular the actions of the two principal International Financial Institutions (IFIs) - the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) - that provides the focus for this report. |

De Paula, Silvana; Dymski, Gary A. |
| Uitgever(s) |
Londen-New York, Zed Books, 2005, , ISBN 1-84277-585-5 |
| Samenvatting |
Consious of the lamentable record of the development economics of the past two decades in both developing countries and the rich industrial nations, the eminent economists and other social scientists who have collaborated in this volume take issue with the neoclassical(-liberal) nostrums. They believe that the recurrent intellectual inadequacies and policy mistakes create an urgent need to rethink economics as a disipline and development as a process. In this volume the autors seek to present an innovative new approach to economic development, drawing from heterodox intellectual traditions within economics as well as from other social sciences. |
