National Advocacy Advisor

SOS Children's Villages Belgium is a Belgian NGO that is active in the field of children's rights in Belgium and in the world. SOS Children's Villages is concerned about all children, particularly children at risk of losing parental care and children who have lost parental care.

We are currently looking for a National Advocacy Advisor (NAA) who will support, with his/her advocacy expertise, the Managing Director and the Head of Programmes to reach the strategic objectives and targets of SOS Children’s Villages Belgium.


 In this position, the National Advocacy Advisor:

  •        Helps with the definition of advocacy priorities, based on internal and external analysis and in accordance with SOS global advocacy priorities (at federation level)
  •        Proposes strategic goals, action plans and budgets for the advocacy work
  •        Conducts SOS advocacy actions in Belgium, both in Flanders and Wallonia
  •        Plans and implements the advocacy and partnership activities and projects in accordance with the defined strategy and the stakeholders’ mapping
  •        Develops and consolidates a solid network of contacts to ensure that fruitful advocacy actions can be conducted
  •        Builds SOS advocacy actions in close connection with SOS innovate approaches and good practices in existing programmes in Belgium and abroad
  •        Monitors and analyzes the trends and developments of the regional and national child care legislations and practices that might affect the target group supported by SOS, and suggests advocacy actions accordingly
  •        When needed, organises and ensures research work on specific themes to facilitate advocacy actions
  •        Positions and represents the organisation in internal and external conferences, working groups and networks (in Belgium or abroad)
  •        Identifies the capacity-building needs of SOS regarding advocacy and related issues and organises relevant actions
  •        Ensures the information flow within SOS on internal and external issues related to the SOS target group, as well as on policy trends within the child welfare system
  •        Documents good advocacy practices
  •        Collaborates with SOS International and other SOS associations abroad on advocacy tools, policies and guidelines
  •        Works with the other departments of SOS on specific fundraising actions and external communication



  •        Master Degree in political sciences/sociology/education/human sciences or alternatively an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience, with at least 5 years of experience in a similar function
  •        Strong expertise in advocacy and research
  •        Good understanding of the federal and regional context in terms of children’s rights and of the social and political decision-making processes in Belgium
  •        Experience with the target group of SOS and with the youth welfare services is an asset
  •        Experience in project management, monitoring and evaluation
  •        Excellent negotiation skills
  •        Excellent communication skills, adapted to the target
  •        Ability to build, lead and work within networks
  •        Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues and partners from various cultures and professional backgrounds
  •        Committed, punctual, proactive and result-oriented
  •        Positive, dynamic and pragmatic


Languages: Excellent command of Dutch and French, good command of English: the hired applicant should be able to lead advocacy activities both in Flanders and Wallonia, as well as liaise with the SOS Children’s Villages network at international level.
