Department of Public Health, Non-Communicable Diseases research group

The mission of the Department of Public Health of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is to conduct public health research of international standing, provide postgraduate education of high quality and engage in service delivery with the ultimate goal to advance global health. The department is organized in multidisciplinary research groups, including public health specialists, epidemiologists, social scientists and health economists.  The non-communicable diseases (NCD) group is dedicated to address the rising burden of chronic NCDs in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and vulnerable populations. The research and academic activities of the group relate to prevention and control of NCDs, from a public health perspective, and with an emphasis on identifying determinants of NCD development, and the formulation of effective strategies to address them.
We are looking for an outstanding researcher with strong quantitative skills to contribute to developing a comprehensive research agenda on NCDs from a public health perspective and with an emphasis on preventive strategies and policies. Specifically, the research fellow will work on the development of models to assess the potential impact of public health strategies to address lifestyle-determinants of chronic NCDs. This work will be integrated in a multidisciplinary team of public health experts, biostatisticians, and epidemiologists at ITM, as well as frequent interactions with international experts and stakeholders.
Within the research focus described above, the research fellow is expected to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:
• Conduct research to identify effective strategies to reduce the burden of NCDs in LMIC and vulnerable populations in high-income countries:
- Carry out systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
- Identify and test public health interventions addressing NCDs, in particular CVD and diabetes.
- Design and implement analytical strategies to evaluate the effectiveness on interventions and strategies, both by primary data collection and analysis or by secondary data use and data modeling.
• Develop new research projects and submit innovative grant proposals.
• Prepare (independently and with others) publications for scientific journals and specialized magazines.
• Co-supervise and/or co-teach students in the Master of Public Health and other academic programs at ITM.
• Mentor junior members of the team and contribute to capacity building activities.
• Build up a network of internal and external researchers addressing prevention and control of CVD in vulnerable populations.
• A PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics or related quantitative health discipline. A Master’s in Public Health is a strong asset.
• Strong quantitative and analytical research skills, as well as expert use of STATA and/or R, for both data management and analysis.
• Knowledge and experience in data modeling.
• Demonstrated creativity and innovation in solving conceptual programing problems.
• Record of original, first-author, manuscripts in applying the above-mentioned skills in the area of prevention of NCDs.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent command of English. Knowledge of French and/or Dutch is an asset.

• A salary set according to the pay scales of ITM and the Flemish universities and to your work experience. Reimbursement of public transport costs and/or bicycle fee, luncheon vouchers and a private pension scheme.
• A full-time contract initially for 1 year, extendable.
• Starting date as soon as possible.
